Questions
What is the difference between version 4 and version 7?
Version 4 is entirely random. Version 7 starts with the current time in milliseconds, so the values sort in the order they were made, which suits database keys.
Are the UUIDs really random?
Yes. They come from your browser's secure random source, the same one used for encryption keys.
Could two UUIDs ever be the same?
In practice, no. A version 4 UUID has 122 random bits, so a repeat is far less likely than a hardware fault.
Is a GUID the same thing?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for a UUID. Choose UPPERCASE if your system expects capital letters.
Are the UUIDs stored or sent anywhere?
No. They are made inside your browser and are gone when you leave the page.
